Fr. Robert-Charles (Shane) Bengry has served as Parish Priest of St John the Evangelist, Calgary, Canada—a Catholic parish of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter—since 2019.
Born and raised on the Alberta prairie, Fr Bengry has also lived and ministered in British Columbia and Manitoba. He holds a Bachelor of Design, a Diploma of Christian Studies, and a Master of Divinity, and was awarded the Medal of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.
Before entering into full communion with the Catholic Church via Anglicanorum coetibus, Fr Bengry served for seven years as priest of a three-point rural parish in the Anglican Diocese of Brandon. Following a period of study and formation for the Catholic priesthood, he was ordained to the transitional diaconate at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham, Houston, Texas, on the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (9 November 2017), and to the Catholic priesthood on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul (29 June 2018). In 2022, he was appointed Dean of the St John the Baptist Deanery, serving in that role until 2025.
Away from parish ministry, Fr Bengry enjoys a variety of creative pursuits. He is an heraldic artist having previously painted for the Crown via the Heraldic Authority of Canada. He is the owner and caretaker of Percy, a 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe Coupe, which he enjoys driving, exhibiting, and maintaining. He also produces YouTube videos and enjoys photography, watercolour painting, graphic design, and a variety of other artistic and musical endeavours.

About the Photograph: This was taken of me at St Stephen’s formerly of Harrisville. The town has dried up entirely except for this little Catholic Church and the adjoining cemetery. It’s about as close to a Bengry family chapel as we have. The Bengry’s were Church of England but there were a few Catholics here and there. My Great, Great Grandma used to worship here and I have relatives buried in the yard. I have permission from the Pastor to say Mass here and have done so from time to time. It’s a beautiful part of the Canadian prairie. — Fr R S Bengry
